The table below lists the most common MS Office 365 installation error codes, their likely causes, and the recommended fix for each.
Error 0x80070005 — Access Denied
Cause
The installer lacks the permissions it needs to write files to your system.
Fix
Right-click the Office installer and select "Run as administrator". If the error persists, temporarily disable your antivirus software and try again. You can also run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant at aka.ms/SaRA to fix permission issues automatically.
Error 0x80004005 — Unspecified Error
Cause
Usually caused by a corrupted download or a conflict with an existing Office installation.

Error Activation Error — "Account Not Associated with a Subscription"
Cause
You are signing in with a different Microsoft account from the one used to purchase the subscription.
Fix
Check which account holds the licence at account.microsoft.com/services. Sign out of all Office apps, then sign back in with the correct account. If you are still unable to activate, contact Microsoft Support at support.microsoft.com.
Error Installer Stuck or Download Not Starting
Cause
Browser compatibility issues, antivirus interference, or insufficient disk space.
Fix
Try a different browser — Microsoft Edge or Chrome work best. Temporarily disable your antivirus during the download. Ensure you have at least 4 GB of free disk space on Windows or 10 GB on Mac. If the installer still hangs, use the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant at aka.ms/SaRA.
Step-by-Step Fixes for MS Office 365 Installation Errors
Work through these steps in order. Most MS Office 365 installation errors are resolved by step 1 or 2.
Run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA)
Download and run the free official tool from Microsoft at aka.ms/SaRA. It automatically detects the cause of the installation error and guides you through the fix. This is the recommended first step for any MS Office 365 installation error.
Check your internet connection
Office 365 requires a stable internet connection throughout the installation. Switch to a wired connection if possible, disable any VPN, and make sure your connection is not being throttled.
Free up disk space
The installation requires at least 4 GB of free disk space on Windows and 10 GB on Mac. Delete temporary files, empty the Recycle Bin, or move large files to an external drive to free up space.
Temporarily disable antivirus software
Some antivirus programs block the Office installer. Disable your antivirus temporarily during installation, then re-enable it once Office is installed. Do not disable Windows Defender permanently.
Run the installer as administrator (Windows)
Right-click the Office installer file and select "Run as administrator" to ensure it has the permissions it needs to write files to protected system directories.
Install pending Windows or macOS updates
Some Office installation errors are caused by missing system updates. On Windows, go to Settings → Windows Update and install all pending updates. On Mac, go to System Settings → General → Software Update.
Restart and reinstall
After running SaRA or making any of the changes above, restart your computer and attempt the installation again from microsoft365.com. A fresh restart clears temporary files that can interfere with the installer.
Check Your Account and Subscription
Many MS Office 365 installation errors are caused by account or subscription issues rather than a problem with the installer itself. Check the following before reinstalling.
Confirm your subscription is active
Sign in at account.microsoft.com/services and check that your Microsoft 365 plan is listed as active. If it shows as expired or cancelled, you will need to renew before you can install. See our guide on how to renew MS Office 365.
Make sure you are using the correct Microsoft account
Sign in with the same Microsoft account you used to purchase the subscription. If you have multiple accounts, try each one at account.microsoft.com/services to find the one that holds the licence.
Check your device limit
Microsoft 365 Personal allows installation on up to 5 PCs or Macs, 5 tablets, and 5 smartphones. If you have reached the limit, sign out of Office on an old device at account.microsoft.com/devices before installing on a new one.
Check for an unknown charge
If you were charged for Microsoft 365 but cannot find an active subscription, see our guide on unknown Microsoft 365 charges for help identifying the charge.
Uninstall and Reinstall Office 365
If the step-by-step fixes above have not resolved the error, a clean uninstall and reinstall is the most reliable solution. Follow these steps carefully.
Run the Office uninstall tool via SaRA
Open the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant at aka.ms/SaRA and select the option to uninstall Office. SaRA removes all Office components, including hidden files that a standard uninstall leaves behind.
Restart your computer
After SaRA completes the uninstall, restart your computer before attempting to reinstall. This clears any locked files or processes that could interfere with the new installation.
Sign in and reinstall from microsoft365.com
Sign in at microsoft365.com with your Microsoft account and follow the on-screen instructions to download and install Office. Your licence follows your account — you do not need a new product key. For the full installation walkthrough, see our guide on how to install MS Office 365.
Activate Office after installation
Once installed, open any Office app such as Word or Excel. You will be prompted to sign in with your Microsoft account to activate. Use the same account that holds your Microsoft 365 subscription.
When to Contact Microsoft Support
If you have worked through all the steps above and the MS Office 365 installation error persists, it is time to contact Microsoft Support directly. Contact Microsoft Support if:
